What to do in a bushfire? Information for carers

In early 2011, following the Kelmscott/Roleystone bushfires, carers raised concerns about the difficulties of evacuating a family member who needed assistance due to physical or psychosocial disability. Carers WA CEO contacted the Minister at that time, and followed up with FESA. Since then, a new Minister and head of FESA have been appointed. Carers WA was recently invited to participate in a project to identify the needs that ‘vulnerable and hard to reach’ people may have during an emergency, such as a bushfire. FESA held a consultative workshop on August 1 and are also asking for feedback via an online survey. Staff from Carers WA have completed the survey highlighting the need for an updated state wide policy to support local strategies that will assist families prior to and during an emergency. For more detail, please see a copy of our response to the survey.
