Description

Walk to Beat is organising a focus group consisting of consumers and carers of people living with Parkinson’s.

  • The session will gather feedback on the Smart Stick, a mobility aid designed to assist with walking and freezing difficulties.
  • Carers will share their observations and insights to help shape the device and its connected app.
  • The focus group will also explore interest in participating in a Smart Stick trial.

 

Time commitment

  • Workshops will run on the second Thursday of each month starting January 2026.
  • Location: Fremantle Hospital/ Fiona Stanley Hospital or online via Teams (final venue details to be confirmed).
  • Each session will last up to two hours and include:
    • Introduction and demonstration of the Smart Stick
    • Discussion with a physiotherapist (where possible)
    • Information about upcoming clinical trials

Carer Representative’s experience required:

  • Experience caring for someone with Parkinson’s who has walking or freezing difficulties.
  • Willingness to share observations and ideas about mobility aids and cues currently used.
  • Interest in exploring new technologies that may improve quality of life and independence.
  • Provide feedback on the Smart Stick concept and its potential benefits.

  • Discuss whether the device could support greater independence and confidence for the person you care for.
  • If interested, you can sign up for the trial during the workshop.

 

Support provided

  • Questions about the Smart Stick and trial will be answered during the session.
  • Assistance with transport can be explored if needed.
  • Parking fees covered and public transport costs reimbursed.
  • Minimum 2-hour payment at $37.50/hr for your time and contribution.

Location of Meetings

Fremantle Hospital or Fiona Stanley Hospital – online attendance is an option

Frequency

2hrs monthly - Dependent on project duration, can be 6 months or a year.

Time and Duration of Meetings

Second Thursday of every month- starting January 2026 for a minimum of 2 hours.
