Additional Information
Young carers are one of the four most at-risk groups of Australian young people, with nearly one in six young people in Australia having caring responsibilities. They are also the most hidden, forgotten and misunderstood within government policy, educational facilities and social service organisations.
In response to these challenges, Carers WA’s Young Carer Team developed a Peer support group toolkit, to assist schools to facilitate a safe space to support children who are caring for a family member with disability, physical or mental health challenges. This was designed in consultation with young carers, educators, non-teaching staff and service providers across WA schools. This toolkit was evaluated in a research partnership between Carers WA and UWA, which was funded by Stan Perron, with the final report on the effectiveness of the toolkit now ready to be launched. The report also includes recommendations for improvement of the toolkit and its processes, as well as systemic recommendations to better support young carers in WA.
