Our Services

Carers WA is a not-for-profit, community based organisation and registered charity dedicated to improving the lives of family and friend carers living in Western Australia.

A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend with disability, a mental health challenge, long-term health condition, alcohol or substance dependency or frailty due to age.

Carers WA supports the empowerment and wellbeing of carers through a range of innovative programs, services and advocacy. Carers WA is the lead service delivery partner for Carer Gateway in WA.

Carer Gateway
Carer Gateway is an Australian Government initiative providing a mix of free online, telephone and in-person supports, services and advice, for family carers in Australia. These services have been specifically designed and tested by carers to help reduce stress and build resilience in the caring role. They include carer support planning, in-person peer support, counselling, facilitated coaching, carer directed support and respite care.

Taking a regular break and having a supportive social network improves wellbeing, is an opportunity to rest and recharge, and helps carers to be in the best position to sustain their caring role.

Carers In Employment
People in a caring role have many valuable and important skills that they bring to a workplace. Entering the workforce after a time away, finding a balance in a current role or supporting an employee who is a carer can sometimes be a challenge. The Carers in Employment Program offers support for carers to enter or re-enter employment and to assist employers to create ‘carer friendly’ workplaces.

Carer Representation
The Carer Representation program enables carers to use their lived experience to provide a voice for all carers and improve services. Carer Representatives are provided with ongoing training and support by a dedicated team at Carers WA.

Prepare to Care Hospital Program
When a patient is discharged from hospital, their family members or friends may play a big role in their life and ongoing care. The Prepare to Care Hospital Program provides resources and information to carers who will be providing ongoing care to patients both during a hospital admission and following discharge from hospital.

Carer Retreats
Carers WA offers two retreats to eligible carers as a space to unwind, relax and recharge. The retreat properties are only available to carers registered with Carers WA. Depending on eligibility, some costs may apply.

Carer Wellness at Home
We recognise that carers can often struggle to find time to access support for themselves. With this in mind we now provide an in-home program that will bring our service and support to you. The Carers WA Carer Wellness at Home Program provides in-home support specifically to carers.

Young Carers
There are over 40,000 young carers within WA who take on additional responsibilities within their family. As a young carer, it is important to know that you are not alone. There are other young people with similar experiences to you and free support services for your individual needs.

Community Capacity Development
Carers WA believe in the importance of community and that everyone has an equal right to have their voices heard, needs met and be included in society. The projects below aim to educate, inform and raise the capacity of individuals, organisations and government to better understand disability and address gaps to progress towards long-term systemic change.

Policy, Systemic Advocacy & Research
The Carers WA Policy Team works to represent the needs and interests of the estimated 230,000 carers in Western Australia and makes evidence-based recommendations to government and other stakeholders on how best to support carers and their families. We welcome feedback on systemic issues and engagement on research, policy and consultation opportunities.
