Bentley Secure Extended Care Unit (SECU) project – Clinical & Practice Working Group (CPWG)

SECU project - CPWG Working Group

Purpose: It is intended to build and commission an inpatient Secure Extended Care Unit (SECU) at Bentley Health Campus, as part of EMHS’ commitment to supporting mental health care. The SECU will provide secure acute and sub-acute inpatient hospital-based rehabilitation for involuntary mental health consumers (18-64 years) who experience severe and unremitting mental illness, have multiple or severe comorbid conditions (including intellectual disability), have challenging behaviours, and have a history of significant risk to self or others. Length of stay is expected to be around one year. We want to make sure that this new service is built and planned with the perspective of consumers and carers at front of mind. We would therefore like to build in carer involvement via the actions listed above ie, a partner in the planning actions along with the various other stakeholders.

Carer experience required: Ideally the carer representative will have experience in supporting a loved one with needs similar to those described above, or for someone who has experienced residing in a mental health care service. The carer representative would need to be prepared to participate in meeting discussions and proceedings.
