Managing the Plan and NDIS funding

The NDIS offers a range of options on how a plan can be managed, allowing participants to have choice and control over the providers they select, including when and how often the supports are delivered. Please click on the following link to understanding an NDIS Plan:

The NDIS have put together a NDIS guide to: Self Management which outlines how to self-manage your plan. This is an excellent resource to learn more about self-managing a plan. 


There are five ways the NDIS Plan can be managed:

1. Self-managing the funds

You (the nominee) or the person you care for, manages the plan and pays for the supports. The NDIS will transfer the money into a chosen bank account and the participant or nominee will pay service staff or organisations directly. This option means you can choose to engage supports from service providers who are both registered and not registered with the NDIS.   • Finding and organising supports
  • Deciding when and how the supports are provided, in accordance with the plan
  • Developing written service agreements and working relationships with service providers. 
  • Directly paying providers
  • Managing costs
  • Keeping a record of purchases and receipts

2. Using a registered Plan Management provider

A registered plan management provider manages the NDIS funding for supports on the participant’s behalf. The participant can receive supports from service providers who are both registered and not registered with the NDIS.

3. Requesting the NDIA to manage the plan

In this option, service providers claim directly from the NDIA when a support has been provided. The NDIA will only engage service providers who are registered with the NDIS.

4. Requesting automated payments (for transport funding only)

Where transport has been included in a participant’s plan. Transport funding is automatically deposited into a participant's personal bank account weekly, fortnightly or monthly, as negotiated.

5. Using a combination of the above.

 The NDIS Code of Conduct 

The National Disability Insurance Agency is in the process of finalising the NDIS Code of Conduct. This function will sit within the new national NDIS Quality and Safeguarding Framework, which was developed to ensure the rights of people with disability are upheld and the services and supports provided through the NDIS are safe.

The Code of conduct will be overseen by the new NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission, which was announced by the Commonwealth Government on 9 May 2017. The Commission will have powers to enforce action where providers or workers have engaged in unacceptable behaviours. 

Participants who self-manage their funding and engage unregistered providers to deliver services are strongly encouraged to provide information about the Code of Conduct and its obligations to unregistered providers - when an agreement to provide services is being negotiated.

 NDIS Quality and Safeguarding Framework

The NDIS quality and safeguarding framework was developed to ensure high quality supports and safe environments for all NDIS participants. It seeks to help participants and providers access information and resolve issues quickly.
