Carers WA supports Carers Australia’s submissions on Independent Assessments

Carers Australia recently responded to a National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) call for submissions on three consultation papers outlining proposed changes to planning, budgets, and the introduction of independent assessments.

Carers WA, along with other state and territory carer organisations, provided input into these submissions.

Carers WA supports Carers Australia’s recommendations urging the NDIA to revisit aspects of the proposed policy and independent assessments to ensure the scheme meets the needs of people with disability and their families and carers.

Recommendations include:

  • The NDIA should trial, evaluate, and publish outcomes of different approaches that achieve the policy aims stated in the three papers.
  • Functional assessments for NDIS participants should include a separate assessment for carers which reflects their needs for support in their own right
  • The NDIA should clearly outline the connection between the assessments and access and eligibility for the NDIS.
  • The NDIA should clarify participants’ review or appeal rights around the results of an assessment undertaken by an independent assessor.
