Jo’s Caring Journey: From Overwhelmed To Empowered

Jo started her journey as a carer when her father, who resided in a remote area with minimal support, could no longer look after himself. Together they made the difficult decision for him to move from his home of many years to live with Jo in Perth where she would become his primary carer. A decision that marked a new chapter in both of their lives.

Her responsibilities as a carer expanded when her mother, who had suffered several strokes, also came to live with her. Amid these changes, Jo managed to maintain her job and care for her son, who is on the Autism spectrum. The experience was challenging, yet Jo’s determination to provide the best possible care for her family remained unwavering.

However, the stress of juggling her responsibilities took a toll on Jo’s emotional wellbeing. She felt isolated and overwhelmed, with her friends and family failing to comprehend the magnitude of her role as a carer. When her father developed dementia and her mother’s health deteriorated, Jo’s resilience was tested to its limits.

It was at this critical juncture that she discovered Carers WA. After an empathetic physiotherapist recommended seeking external help, Jo reached out to the organisation. The support they provided was transformative. Carers WA got involved and provide support for Jo so that she could regain her footing amidst the chaos of her duties as a carer.

Feeling acknowledged as a carer for the first time, Jo found solace and understanding in her interactions with Carers WA. Their support allowed her to continue her role as a carer, while also maintaining her own emotional wellbeing. Jo even sought online counselling through the organisation, finding further comfort and guidance in her challenging journey.

Despite the emotional rollercoaster, Jo’s journey as a carer brought her closer to her parents. She shared heartwarming memories, such as taking her father on a Ferris wheel ride in Fremantle, something he had never experienced before. Despite the hardships, these moments of joy and connection made her journey worthwhile.

Today, Jo continues to navigate her journey as a carer with strength and resilience. Although she admits that asking for help was initially challenging, her experience with Carers WA has shown her the value of reaching out. Her advice to other carers is

To remember that seeking help doesn’t signify failure. Rather, it can be a lifeline in the often tumultuous journey of being a carer.

Jo’s story is a powerful testament to the strength and resilience of carers. It underscores the importance of seeking support when needed and highlights the invaluable role organisations like Carers WA play in supporting those who dedicate their lives to caring for others.
