Balancing Life and Care
Meet Jo, a devoted single mother who has spent the past 17 years caring for her son. Her life is a constant balancing act: managing part-time work while providing full-time care for a child with unique needs, including support with communication, social interaction, and sensory challenges.
Being a carer is more than being a mother. It is physically and emotionally demanding in ways most people don’t see.
The Courage to Ask for Help
For years, Jo carried the weight of her responsibilities alone. When life became overwhelming, she made a decision to reach out to Carers WA. Her first experience was transformative. Carers WA listened, understood her needs, and offered practical and emotional support, including counselling and access to resources. For Jo, this was a lifeline that helped her shift focus from mounting challenges to what matters most: her son.
My initial interaction with Carers WA was fantastic. They understood me and gave me the support I needed.
Learning the Importance of Self-Care
Just as we are reminded to secure our own oxygen mask before assisting others on a plane, Jo learned the importance of looking after herself. Through counselling, she discovered how to carve out time for self-care without guilt.
The constant reminder from my counsellor that I matter and need to look after my health has been invaluable.
Carers WA also helped with practical supports, arranging a deep clean of her home and a garden tidy up, creating a safer space for her son to play. These small ‘circuit-breakers’ made a profound difference to Jo’s wellbeing and daily life.
Finding Joy Amid Challenges
Despite the exhaustion, frustration, and occasional anger that come with caring, Jo finds immeasurable joy in her role. The trust her son places in her, allowing her to do simple things like washing his hair, speaks volumes about their special bond.
We share a fantastic relationship filled with smiles, giggles, and mutual understanding.
Advice for Other Carers
For other single mothers who feel overwhelmed yet hesitant to seek help, Jo’s advice is simple:
You are not alone, and there is no shame in asking for support.
